Blasting Technology Center successfully dismantle the old granary of Jinzhou Port

At 3 pm on March 21, 2011, with an order, the old granary and working tower in Jinzhou Port were blasted and dumped three times in a row, and they were squeezed and collapsed within the predetermined range. The surrounding chemical tanks and pipelines were safe and sound. The busy past was quickly restored.

The old granary of Jinzhou Port is located on the side of the scenic resort of Beacon Hill. The total height of the granary is 40m. It is composed of 12 cylindrical reinforced concrete cylinders with a diameter of 11m. The thickness of the cylinder is 20cm. The west granary working tower is a reinforced concrete frame structure. The height is 50m, the width is 8m wide from north to south, and the width is 27m from east to west. The first and second floors are connected with the silo. There are three corridors at the top and the silo. The surrounding environment of the granary is complex: 50m away from the working tower is the chemical tank area and the oil pipeline. There is a substation at 109m from the north side of the silo, a dock at 22m on the west, and a chemical and oil pipeline on the east side at 90m. The empty space between the oil pipeline and the silo group is the defined collapse area of the demolition structure.

This project is the first silo demolition project in China that takes the lead in simulation technology. The technical personnel of Beijing Institute of Technology Beiyang Blasting Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. conducted repeated investigations after on-site investigations. The blasting technology center combined with numerical simulation technology. With extensive experience in blasting, the demolition plan of the granaries was demonstrated, and a plan for first-time kerf separation, subdivision and sub-disposal demolition was successfully developed. Because of the special requirement in the site space constraints of the port area, the demolition of the silo group adopts the “middle splitting and one-way dumping” blasting program. Through the treatment of the top and bottom of the silo and the collapsed site, the entire one-time demolition of the warehouse group and its subsidiary structures was implemented, in which the two parts of the silo cluster collapsed eastward and the working tower finally collapsed northward. Demolition blasting was a complete success. Blasting vibration and flying stones were all controlled within the design standards and achieved the expected effects of cost savings, safety and environmental protection. The blasting result was fully affirmed by the Jinzhou Port and local government and public security departments.

With the development of blasting technology, there are many reports on blasting demolition of buildings and structures in complex environments. People are very concerned about such events. Because of their risks, this blasting practice shows that using computer simulation technology can simulate the collapse process of buildings before blasting. Blasting program design and optimization parameters can guarantee safety to the greatest extent possible. The blasting technology center of the State Key Laboratory of Explosive Science and Technology is a blasting research institute jointly established by this laboratory and Beijing Institute of Technology Beiyang Blasting Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., relying on the unremitting efforts of teachers and students of the technical support and blasting discipline group of Beijing Institute of Technology, North Blasting will continue to improve its technological innovation capabilities and make more contributions to blasting technology development.
