On May 20, 2017, the annual National Science and Technology Week kicked off. The SKLEST at Beijing Institute of Technology held a public open day with the theme “Entering the Explosive Science and Impacting the Future of Science and Technology” to publicize the knowledge of explosion science and technology and demonstrate to the public the technology of Explosive Science at Beijing Institute of Technology including major technological innovations in the field. Jun Hu, Minister of Science and Technology of Beijing Institute of Technology, and Ruishi Wang, Wang Wei party secretary of the School of Mechatronical Engineering, Cheng Wang, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Explosive Science and Technology, and Li Yang, Yan Liu, and Guangyan Huang, deputy directors attended the event. More than 100 teacher-student representatives, parents of students and social enthusiasts from the Beijing No.55 middle school, No 11 middle schools and Polytechnic School attended the event. The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Yang Li
At the opening ceremony, Wei Wang first made welcome remarks on behalf of the laboratory and the college. He briefly introduced the general situation of the laboratory and wished that the students would be able to walk into the science of explosion and welcome everyone to come and visit. Jun Hu extended a warm welcome to all the guests on behalf of the school. He pointed out that science and technology should step out of the ivory tower and go out into the public. Through the open platform of the public, high-tech technology will be presented to the future vital forces. I hope that the students can correctly understand the science of explosion and train the love of science. Later, Professor Shunshan Feng, an expert with outstanding contributions from the state, gave an excellent report titled “Application of Explosive Technology in National Economy”. The report is based on the explosion phenomenon in life, expalined the concepts and classification of explosions ranging from black powders to total nitrogen compounds and metal hydrogens, and briefly describes the application of explosion science and technology in the national economy. The theme of the report is rich in content, illustrated, lively and interesting, in plain language, interspersed with a large number of video animation, to provide a visual feast to all guests, after the report, the audience talked with Prof. Feng on issues of concern.
This year's major scientific and technological innovations exhibition in the field of explosion and protection, including explosive diamond synthesis, explosive spraying, explosion welding, explosive sintering, rotating detonation engines, flexible explosion-proof technology, 3D printing protection materials, metal water and so on. Through personal experience, professional teachers gave lectures on the spot, everyone felt the charm of explosion science, learned about the cutting-edge science and technology related to explosions, and learned explosive knowledge beyond books.
Subsequently, audience visited the Beijing Institute of Technology History Museum. The School History Museum consists of five venues: "Yan'an was born and thrive", "relocate and fight in the dawn of North China", "Glorious mission to serve national requirement", "Reform and opening up to write histroy" and "Passion and enterprising innovation and brilliant" to show the Academy of Natural Sciences (previous name of Beijing Institute of Technology) since its birth in Yan'an in 1940, it has experienced hardships and tempestuous journeys to Northern China and finally settled on the fighting history of Beijing.
At the end of the event, everyone visited the 100-meter-long explosion duct and explore the equipment and testing methods used in the explosion safety. Professional teachers have actually demonstrated the density measurement of energetic materials, flash point testing of explosives, hardness and roughness testing of protective materials, 3D printing protective material experiments, dust explosion ignition energy and minimum dust ignition temperature test, and light air gun shooting. Those demonstrations have further deepened the scientific understanding of explosion safety. The wonderful explanations from the professional teachers won the applause of the students. The students benefited from the interaction of the professional teachers by personally participating in the test of the explosives performance methods.
The State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology, as the only national key laboratory in the field of explosion in China, has become an important base for scientific research, personnel training and academic exchange in the field of explosion science and technology. The opening of the public open day in the laboratory is a reflection of the country’s call for “innovation-driven development strategy” and full implementation of the social responsibilities of the national scientific research academic institutions. It is a strategy for constantly advancing the strategy of “scientific and technological innovation, talent cultivation, scientific popularization, and open service”. Important measures have played an important role in promoting the cultivation of science and technology talents for young people and the dissemination and dissemination of knowledge about explosion science and technology. The public open day event of this year’s “Entering the Explosive Science and Impacting the Future of Science and Technology” was followed and reported by a number of media including the China Science Journal, Science and Technology Daily, China Youth Daily, and Beijing Youth Daily, and was well received by the teachers and students.
