报告人简介:

Dr. W.G. Proud is the Director of the Institute of Shock Physics and has been active in research in the area of energetic materials since 1994. He has published 100 journal articles and 200 conference papers. In 2000 he won the Hubert Schardin Medal from the German Physical Society for contributions to high-speed diagnostics. In 2013 he founded the ‘Shock Waves and Extreme Conditions’ group of the Institute of Physics.

报告简介:

The evidence for the existence of hot-spot mechanisms in energetic materials begins in the 1930’s. Since then researchers have identified critical mechanisms for hot-spot formation. Many of these mechanisms operate in an additive fashion so over-attention to one mechanism can lead to incorrect conclusions.

This talk will present aspects of research into the hot-spot ignition of materials. Topics will include – (1) the effect of grain size, crystal quality and density on sensitivity and ignition, (2) secondary harmonic generation in HMX (3) the measurement of output from detonating high explosives and IEDs.

The link between these topics is the use of high-speed diagnostics, careful choice of sample preparation and experimental design. Attention to detail is important to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms operating in energetic materials.

The output from these studies is used to derive models which are used in a predictive fashion.
