Clive Woodley is a world expert on the mathematical modelling of the internal ballistics of guns and, in particular, modelling the ignition and combustion of energetic materials. He has contributed to the internal ballistics modelling of many of the gun systems used by the UK Armed Forces.
Clive recently applied his knowledge of the ignition and burning characteristics of gun propellants to the development of tools to predict the Insensitive Munition (IM) response of explosive-filled stores – providing critical insight into understanding the ‘burn to violent reaction’ mechanism in explosive materials.
His work has included developing innovative numerical modelling techniques to assess the risks and potential performance gains of novel gun systems, such as liquid propellant guns and electric guns. Clive’s pioneering multi-phase flow modelling techniques for accurately predicting the ignition and combustion of propellants are now being extended to pyrotechnic flares and the hazard response of energetic materials.
The first person in the world to identify enhanced combustion of propellants due to plasma, Clive led the successful development of ground-breaking theories to model and understand the phenomenon.
